At least thirteen passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's key government projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine what caused this incident,” stated the national leader.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its role in national works. They were executed at an rapid speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled significant apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in full accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
