Matteo Cancellieri Displays Flashing Moments of Exceptional Talent in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had allowed 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Coming Unstitched?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or had there never been any cohesion maintaining its structure to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, before he admitted that the club had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Rumours that he might quit were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club became as messy on the pitch as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining initial five matches, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it has been hard to determine if they're getting better or imploding.

Matteo's Surprising Comeback

At least one man remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio this year. He spent last season on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, his parent club were attempting to stay there a while longer. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad with no new signings.

He joined originally when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances with the club in 2022-23, all but one of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."

Finding His True Position

Maybe Sarri was persistently working to work out the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
