The Generosity of Strangers: How a Man I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Land the Position That Altered My Path

During the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a budget travel adventure to Europe with a friend. Since my travel mate was considering enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had arranged a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a sizeable multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side called International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, sat down, and began chatting with other diners.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He asked me what I did, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been performing experiments involving microscopic analysis.

He noted that there was an research lab at the institution – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I should apply for a role with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I went out exploring, returning to the canteen that evening. The man from Iraq came up to me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Since he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off told my host that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

As is common in NYC – a city where opportunities abound – she said: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for three years. One of the benefits was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

I never saw that student again and I don’t even know his name, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in multiple respects. I didn't possess the bravery or self-belief to contact anyone at an Ivy League university and seek a position. Moreover, I had long dreamed to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that role at the university paved the way for a position in Switzerland where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I now have four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
